T A C K W A L L :: Imagine The Possibilities

Posted May 24th, 2013 in Tackwall | No Comments

This week we spent a lot of time with friend and fantastic photographer, Paul Johnson. We shot an array of items from print collateral to coasters, ice cream to iPads. Today, we’re sharing a recently wrapped up project that we just shot – the Connecticut Stone ThinStone Brochures. We were very excited to redesign and update these brochures, especially because within the last year we have redesigned their logo, kick-started a new social media campaign and prepare to launch a new website.

Let us know – what do you think of the brochures?

It’s that time of year – graduation. I’ve been seeing countless videos of commencement speeches, articles on career and interviewing advice and social media postings of photos and congratulatory messages for students of all ages. This is a very exciting time of year as summer approaches, the weather is getting nicer and everyone seems in the mood for “change.” It can also be a frightening time for graduates. In thinking back to my own college graduation and I had a mix of both excitement and nervousness for what was ahead. What would I do, where would I live, could I get a job right away, what did I want my job to be? So as I see all the hopeful, yet nervous photos of recent college graduates, it always has me thinking the same thing – what advice do you wish you could go back and give yourself after you graduate.

Here are a few of my favorite pieces of advice ::

1. Don’t Look Back

T A C K W A L L :: Its Not Just A…

We’re excited to share with you a project that we wrapped up earlier this spring for Expand International of America.

We took on the challenge of developing the concept for and designing the complete tradeshow booth graphics for Expand, a company that invents and manufactures high-end tradeshow booth and event display products.

During our kick-off meeting, it became clear to us that Expand’s target audience was not aware of the full spectrum of products and services they provide, such as original designs (did you know Expand invented the free-standing roll-up pop-up banner?), global shipping and storage, worldwide trade show support, inventory tracking and more.

Out of that meeting, Elements was able to pinpoint the goal for the booth. In a clear and striking way, we were able to highlight each unique message that unified all that Expand offers. The theme we developed and designed was “It’s Not Just A…” showcasing each one of their varied services.

For example “It’s Not Just a Light ” became “It’s Not Just a Light … When It Illuminates Your Message” – refers to their custom designed spotlights, illuminated light boxes and a plethora of beautifully crafted display lighting options.

The image above is just one of several larger pieces Elements completed for Expand International booth.

Our client had this to say at the conclusion of our tradeshow booth project:

“Working with Amy and the team at Elements was a simple and stress-free process. The entire staff was easy to work with and provided us with several fantastic concepts for our trade show booth.

As a team, we were not sure which direction to take our booth graphics as we had tried several times in the past with different messages and graphics but none of our solutions seemed to resonate or explain well what we do – leaving our potential customers confused.

When we first met with Elements, they listened first, asked a lot of questions and came back with the exact right message we needed to say but were unable to get there on our own. The rest of the project – from concepts to creative  through to completion – was a pleasure and we are delighted with the results – as were our customers. We have never had so much excitement and interaction around our booth. We look forward to our next project with their team,” Ed Fedorowich, Marketing Coordinator, Expand International of America, Inc.

Many companies have trouble getting started in the right direction or deciding what their true marketing message should be – and that can be frustrating, time consuming and expensive and worse – confusing for your intended audience. We are experts at uncovering the right direction and then making the complex clear to tie it all together with perfect balance of message and creative. Call us and let us show you how.

Elements Library :: “Made to Stick”

Posted May 16th, 2013 in Blog, Elements Library | No Comments

“A lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can even get its boots on.” ~Mark Twain

That is so true. But why?

And it’s not only lies – but scandals, rumors, urban legends, ghost stories, dirty jokes …

Every wonder why some ideas stick while others die on the vine?

Brothers and co-authors Chip and Dan Heath have figured out how to make our ideas memorable. In my April read, “Made To Stick”, they clearly and succinctly break it down to – yes, another dreaded acronym – SUCCESs. This one, I may actually remember.

  • Simple: hone in on the core of any idea and strip away anything unnecessary. “Simple ideas are core and compact” (direct quote from the book).
  • Unexpected: surprise your audience to capture their attention and have a fresh, new perspective all your own.
  • Concrete: convey your idea in such a way that it can be easily understood and recalled using real world examples
  • Credible: it must be believable, vivid details help credibility
  • Emotional: we know when you can touch someone’s emotions, it will stick with them and move them to act
  • Stories: when you narrate an idea into a story, it is remembered. Think of Aesop’s fables or fairytales. Stories are powerful vehicles to captivate, learn, and pass information along.

This book is helpful for those of us who are in sales, marketing, public relations, managers, and communicators. The chapters are broken down by the acronym I shared above where they get into more specifics, provide entertaining examples, and left me with several usable, solid takeaways that will help me with my writing and presentations – and help me with my clients’ marketing.

Here were a few of the points in the book that (sorry!) stuck with me:

“Belief counts for a lot, but belief isn’t enough. For people to take action, they have to care.”

“Core messages help people avoid bad choices by reminding them of what’s important.”

“Avoid burying the lead. Don’t start with something interesting but irrelevant in hopes of entertaining the audience. Instead, work to make the core message itself more interesting.” {Confession: I did go back and read this posts lead. See, it’s working already! And I’ve added a nice quote from Mark Twain to make it interesting. I hope you like it}.

“The first problem of communication is getting people’s attention. The most basic way to get someone’s attention is this: Break a pattern.”

“Curiosity … happens when we feel a gap in our knowledge. Our tendency is to tell people the facts. First, though, they must realize that they need these facts.”

The above were just a selected few of the many passages I highlighted to share with you. In addition, sprinkled throughout are some spot-on examples that illuminated their points perfectly and were quite entertaining.

I enjoyed reading this book and just now as I was looking back over my notes to write this post, I realized that I have already been incorporating much of the advice already without my having to go back to my notes or think too much about it. Clearly, some of their imparted wisdom stayed with me (I’m avoiding using a cliché word here. And, you’re welcome).

Have you read this book? Did you find it as helpful as I did? Or, have you not read it yet but think it might be interesting and useful to you? Let’s discuss!

Noted :: One Second…On Your Mark, Get Set, Snap!

Posted May 15th, 2013 in Noted | 1 Comment

This just might be my favorite blog post to write each month. I get excited about sharing my favorite apps that can help spark a unique social media or marketing idea or jumpstart a mobile media strategy. Also, these apps are just really fun and innovative technology that I get to try out and play with!

1. 1SE

1SE stands for “One Second Everyday.” This app allows you to take a video and/or pulls in all of the videos you’ve taken and snip together a one second clip from each day. At first I thought, what good would a one second video do – isn’t that just a glorified photo? But seeing a moving video that brings together your entire month is pretty amazing. When you open the app, it automatically pulls in and highlights days that you’ve already taken a video. The general screen is put together like a calendar and the days you have videos appear on orange. Once you pull up a video then it allows you to select the one-second clip that you’d like to feature on that day – its really very simple and easy to use. Once your month is complete you can share your videos directly through Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube.

Each month we do a recap of our blog in pictures. Instead of a stagnant recap, we could use 1SE and transform it to a moving motion picture recap that our readers can watch. There are many opportunities like this for brands and businesses – this is mobile media at its finest, get creative! In a world where we are updated instantaneously through social media networks, this app is moving in and moving towards the next wave of social media sharing. It’s following two big trends in Social Media, instant updates (anyone has time to watch a one second clip) and video technology – ex. popular apps like Keek and Tout.

2. Marksta

In today’s digital age, using or “stealing” someone else’s photos on online is a common occasion. We’ve become accustom to taking images on our phones and using and sharing those images on every social network out there. And with those two statements, you’ll see why this app is genius. It allows you to watermark your work and then upload to any of your social networks. It also allows you to customize the watermark, which is great for anyone, but especially designers or photographers who are looking to add something more then just a standard text watermark. Why risk someone else taking credit for your work when this awesome app does the work for you?

How Is It Relevant For Your Business?
We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – creating content is key. Images are a huge part of your content strategy and too often, images are being used online without proper credits. This app makes it fool-proof for you to watermark your images, your designs or your content and post directly onto the most popular and most social, social media sites. Using this app is so simple that it’s hard to justify why anyone wouldn’t watermark their images, especially when sharing them on social media. Getting your content out to the masses critical, getting credit for that content is even more important.

3. Snapseed

Snapseed is not your average photo-enhancing app. It gives you many more options and much more control over what, where and how you edit your images. This app is for the more “advanced” user, as in, it doesn’t do all the work for you – you don’t just click a button and it “auto-enhances” your image. Too often, those one-click apps don’t maximize your photo to look its best. With Snapseed you’re able to adjust your photos contrast, brightness and other standard enhancement tools with just the swipe of a finger – but it’s also a lot more then that. You can focus in and edit selective parts of an image, you can crop or straighten an image by a percentage of a degree, and you can even add in photo filters (like Instagram) that focus in on specific parts of your photo.

How Is It Relevant For Your Business?
Camera phone images aren’t always the best quality and yet, we use images that we take on our phones for everything. This application will give your camera phone images a much more professional look and gives you more control over the edits to the image. There are many apps that have an “automatic” color correcting or enhancement button, but that usually isn’t the best option for your photo. In working at a design firm, I have come to greatly appreciate the work that goes into making an image just right. Using this app will certainly show that you put time, effort and care into the content you’re sharing. You want to put your best photo forward and you can do just that using Snapseed.
