Here’s A Thought :: The Clock Is Ticking …

I hope you all remembered to turn your clocks back this weekend for Daylight Savings Time? Oh, good.

Not to alarm you, but as of today, there are only 56 more days until the end of the year. That’s less than two months until 2013!

I’ve always had a problem with the term “falling back”. Have you? It somehow implies that even though we are setting our clocks backwards and losing valuable daylight, we should be “falling backwards” on getting our work done, as the phrase would imply.

Rather, I feel quite the opposite this time of year. Daylight Savings Time – and the feeling of shorter days – has always acted as an alarm going off in my mind alerting me to the fact that I need to hustle before year end. I’m like a squirrel running around frantically trying to hide and hoard every last acorn I can gather.

I posed this very same challenge to you last year on this blog – and prepare yourself, because I’m going to challenge you again right now.

With only 56 more days until the end of the year, what business goals can you reasonably hope to accomplish before December 31st?

Here is my challenge for you: Make a list of 13 items you hope to accomplish in the next 56 days and then let’s help motivate each other to get it done. What do you say?

I’ll go first. Here is my list of 13 by 2013:

1. Write a marketing plan for the first quarter of 2013

2. Plan our marketing budget for 2013

3. Design, print, assemble and mail out our Elements New Year’s cards and gifts on time

4. Finish and submit my book proposal to my publisher

5. Design, print and package two items for sale in Goods shop

6. Clean and organize my desk! (You will remember this one from last year, and the year before, and the year before that …)

7. Clean out and purge all our old files in the office

8. Take a day off. A real day off. And take a break from all the holiday hustle and bustle to simply relax.

9. Buy a snazzy, new digital camera and start using it (I have my eye on this one …)

10. Start working on our Elements postcards for 2013

11. Finish redesigning our new Elements website and get started on the web development

12. Begin writing an article for a design publication I’ve been asked to write

13. And last, but certainly not least, volunteer and donate to help the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

I will report back with my progress on the above list and hope you will do the same. Leave a comment below with some of the things you hope to cross off your To Do list yet this year.

And let’s get moving. The clock is – after all – ticking!
