As our “Week of Giving” comes to a close, we want to remind everyone that the holiday season isn’t the only time of year that you can and should give back. There are people, places and organizations that are in need of help year-round. This week we were able to highlight three amazing organizations that are helping to give back. Are there any organizations – local or otherwise – that you feel are deserving of recognition? If so, we’d love to know about them and give them a shout-out on our blog to encourage our readers to give all year long.

Today we’re introducing you to a wonderful Branford-based organization, Read to Grow, Inc. which works to promote early literacy for all Connecticut children. They are the only statewide nonprofit organization that connects with parents in the hospital setting and prepares them to take an active role in their child’s literacy development from day one. To help parents create language-rich homes in which children can develop critical early skills, they provide books to families and to the program that interact with infants, toddlers, and school-age children and their parents.

Read to Grow is an organization that can truly benefit from donations year-round and there are many ways you can contribute to this organization and make a difference in children’s lives. Here’s how you can help ::

  • Donate online now, make a multi-year pledge, or remember Read to Grow in your long-term financial planning :: You can make a donation now and help children and families today. You can make a planned gift and ensure our ability to help children and families in the future.
  • Run a book drive in your neighborhood, business or school :: Hosting a book drive or setting up a collection site at your school or place of business serves children, promotes early literacy, and encourages families to read. Our programs depend upon donations of books from our Connecticut communities, and we need your help!
  • Volunteer in one of our hospital-based programs or in our Branford office :: Read to Grow volunteers provide an invaluable service to our organization, and to families throughout the state. Some of our volunteers work in our Branford office; others work in our hospital-based programs, visiting with families on maternity units to encourage them to read to their babies.
  • Start a Read to Grow Club in your school :: Be a part of Read to Grow by starting a Read to Grow Club. It’s a great way to involve your school community in helping to make sure all Connecticut children grow up with books of their own and the opportunity to learn to love reading.
  • Sponsor an event to benefit Read to Grow :: For example, Have a “Literacy Luncheon” or party to collect books to benefit Read to Grow, use your imagination and create your own project to collect books, share the Read to Grow message by telling others about our programs.
We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and will be able to spread the word about the organizations we highlighted this week – we’re always looking to spread the holiday spirit of giving as best we can!
