Marketers are always looking to the future to stay current in our ever-changing world. As we settle into the new year, we can look forward to seeing more of these popular design trends.
FLAT DESIGN
The most common example of this trend is the icon. Many companies have followed in the footsteps of Apple and modernized their mobile icons by omitting almost any trace of drop shadows and gradients – turning them into simplified, stripped-down versions of their previous selves. While the flat design trend is most prevalent in devices, it is quickly spreading to all aspects of design including print and web.

SIMPLE COLOR SCHEMES
In addition to flat design, many companies are modernizing their brands by adopting simplified color schemes. A palette limited to only one or two colors strengthens brand recognition by leaving a lasting impression that reaches the audience quickly and easily.
VIDEOS INSTEAD OF TEXT
Companies are utilizing videos on the web to connect with an audience who might opt for watching or listening rather than reading. Some videos build a sense of excitement that might otherwise be lost in traditional text. With videos becoming increasingly easy to create, we are sure to be seeing more of them taking front and center on many websites.
GEOMETRIC SHAPES
Geometric forms and patterns have a timeless feel that seem to never go out of style. These days you can find the geometric trend used in unexpected ways, like in this wire wreath by HRUSKAA, available on Etsy. While it doesn’t seem like this trend is going anywhere soon, it is certainly hot right now!
HOME-GROWN LOGOS
The rise of simple, clean logos will only continue to increase this year. Designs with a modest, genuine feel – sometimes called home-grown – are popular with smaller startup’s as well as some larger companies. Sometimes used to depict a brand’s natural or handmade mission, this trend frequently uses a mix of retro typography and stylized shapes.
