As we hope you remembered, Mother’s Day is this Sunday, May 11th – a day I personally can’t wait for, being a mom now myself.
This Mother’s Day, each of us here in the studio wanted to take a moment to say “Thanks, Mom”.
My Mom passed away when I was just 11, but I remember so much about her and think of her often – especially at Mother’s Day, of course.
My mom Joan was brave.
She fought hard to the bitter end, never believing cancer would beat her.My mom was strong.
She never complained. She never felt sorry for herself. I remember her crying only once when we said goodbye the day she died.My mom was filled with compassion.
She cared and loved everyone. She was a nurse, a teacher, a mentor to many. Everyone who knew her felt her warmth. She radiated with it. My brother and I were so lucky. She always made us feel special and surrounded by her love – even now, I still feel her love for me. What a gift.My mom was brilliant.
She worked her way through nursing school at Boston College with scholarships and never stopped. She continued to go to school her whole life, getting her third and final college degree, magna cum laude, from UConn in Urban Planning one month before she died. She never stopped learning or teaching. I admire that about her even more now than I did then knowing how hard it must have been for her – married, working as a nurse, teaching at Yale School of Nursing, raising two small children while dying of cancer. I try to keep this in mind whenever things seem overwhelming. It puts my life into sharp perspective. My mom was supportive.
She saw mine and my brother’s talent long before we ever did and encouraged us to pursue them at all costs – David with his music, and me with my art. She was right, of course. She was always right.Happy Mother’s Day Mom. I feel honored and lucky to have spent eleven (far too short) years with you. You set the bar high for me but I keep you in my heart and aspire to make you proud everyday and instill your brilliant qualities in the beautiful grandchildren you never got to meet.
